St Simon Stock Catholic School Learning Support

Literacy Support

Literacy Support is Provided through:

  • Direction from the schools Literacy Coordinator and Additional Educational Needs Coordinator.
  • Liaison between the staff responsible for students who are Gifted and Talented, have Additional Educational Needs or who have English as an Additional Language.
  • Implementation of the whole school literacy policy by all teaching and support staff.
  • Regular testing of literacy skills, to monitor progression.
  • Key Stage 3: Withdrawal from lessons (as appropriate) for delivery of programmes such as the Secondary Social Use of Language Programme, the Supported Literacy Programme, SRA Corrective Reading Programme and Toe-by-Toe.
  • Students inĀ  Key Stage 3 who have specific literacy difficulties are taught English in our Golden Curriculum classes with specialist Additional Educational Needs Staff and have a highly differentiated curriculum.
  • Intervention programmes are taught within our Supported Learning Centre, which is a purpose built unit for all of our students to use, but particularly our students with additional educational needs. It is a safe and positive working environment, at the heart of our school.
  • We also use Year 11 Learning Coaches to provide students across the school with 1-1 reading support.
  • We have also refurbished our school library and it is a vibrant learning environment that further enhances our literacy provision across the school. The library is ran by our school librarian, Mrs Murrell.
  • We also hold a homework club every evening after school, as part of our extended services and literacy support is provided here for students.
  • Key Stage 4: Alternative curriculum for students who may not be suitable for the traditional GCSE courses. We offer Supported Learning sessions where students can get extra support with their studies and they also complete the Edexcel Adult Literacy and Numeracy course which provides them with added qualifications to their GCSE’s. Vocational courses for KS4 students that are provided through our partnership with Mid-Kent College. We also offer alternatives to GCSE’s, such as the ASDAN course.
