Science

Subject Leader: Mrs G. Betts

The Science Department is situated in its own block and currently consists of nine teaching laboratories and three preparation areas as well as a department work/resources area. Four of these rooms have been recently refurbished and there are plans to develop the remaining teaching areas in the near future. There are currently seven full time and one part time teaching staff and four technical support staff. All staff teach in their own laboratory and most lessons are taught in specialist rooms.

Key Stage Three

As of September 2008 students will have six lessons of Science per fortnight.

  • Year 9 follow Catalyst (based on the QCA Scheme of Work)
  • Year 8 follow Catalyst (based on the QCA Scheme of Work)
  • Year 7 follow Go Science! (based on the QCA Scheme of Work)

Key Stage Four

Students have nine lessons of Science per two weeks
Three options are open to students at the beginning of Year 10;

  • Begin Single CORE Science and the course runs for two years.
  • Begin Double Science, sit CORE Science in year 10 and sit Additional Science in year 11.
  • Begin Separate Sciences and sit papers through the 2 years in all three disciplines.

Key Stage Five

A Level courses are offered for sixth form students in

  • Edexcel AS/A2 Level Biology
  • Edexcel AS/A2 Level Chemistry
  • Edexcel AS/A2 Level Physics 

As of September 2008 we will be following the new curricula set out by QCA and we will be offering full support to students in the form of textbooks and fully assisted practical provision.
